Dans ce dialogue empli de sagesse, Caton est désigné comme l'avocat de la vieillesse contre quatre chefs d'accusation : elle empêcherait de briller dans la vie publique, affaiblirait le corps, interdirait les plaisirs et ferait sentir l'approche de la mort. Pour Caton au contraire, la vieillesse est l'âge le plus propice aux ouvres accomplies de l'esprit, le corps étant délivré de la servitude des sens.
Elle prépare l'âme à la libération totale procurée par la mort. Caton suggère une attitude exemplaire et loue l'expérience. Celui qui n'attend que de lui-même n'a rien à craindre des lois de la nature : "La faiblesse convient à l'enfance ; la fierté à la jeunesse ; la gravité à l'âge mûr ; la maturité à la vieillesse : ce sont autant de fruits naturels qu'il faut cueillir avec le temps." Né en 106 av.
J.-C., mort en l'an 43, Cicéron put très jeune démontrer ses talents d'orateur, devenir grand avocat de Rome et connaître la gloire, lors du procès qui conduisit à la condamnation de Caius Verrès, gouverneur concussionnaire de la Sicile. Consul, il écrivit des ouvres de philosphie politique (De oratore, De re publica et De legibus) et un Brutus. Défenseur d'un idéal de formation universelle, il est souvent placé à l'origine de l'humanisme tel que conçu à la Renaissance.
